To celebrate Women’s History month we have a line up of awesome women in the music industry visiting DIME Denver for our masterclass series. This week we kick start with the incredible Neyla Pekorjak (The Lumineers) who will be performing and answering questions from our students.
We couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to DIME. Other guests lined up for this month include Meredith Badler (an arts administrator), APLUS (Detroit born sisters who not only have their own record out on Original 1265, but also write for stars including Justin Bieber and Mary J Blige) and Doe Phillips (tour manager for Oasis, Noel Gallagher, Blondie and, currently, Jake Bugg).
Neyla Pekerak began playing cello at age 9 in her native city of Denver, Colorado. She studied Musical Theatre and earned a degree in Music Education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. Back in Denver while searching for a teaching position, she answered a Craigslist ad for a local folk band needing a cello player. This band was The Lumineers, and she soon became a core member of the group, playing on their GRAMMY-nominated self-title debut and follow-up album and performing on every continent (except Antarctica!). Neyla is a member of Sweet Adelines International, a women’s barbershop quartet organization, and she won the 2009 Rising Star championship with her quartet, Vogue. When not making music, Neyla enjoys collecting rubber stamps, true crime TV, and spending time with her pet bunny rabbit, Barbara. She’s currently working on a studio album of Rattlesnake. Neyla will be performing her solo set at the Syntax Physic Opera House March 9th. Make sure you go to the show!
Meredith Badler works with Colorado Business Committee for the Arts (CBCA) a company that strives to advance Colorado’s creative economy by connecting business and the arts. They accomplish their mission through year-round advocacy, research, training, and arts engagement efforts. Joining Meredith in this masterclass is Dave Ratner, who followed a career in the music and entertainment management businesses as a tour manager, publicist, band manager and founder of his own management agency, Dave Ratner now specializes in entertainment, intellectual property, and business law.
Detroit born and raised sisters, Anesha Birchett and Antea Shelton, comprise the singer/songwriter duo APLUS. Being products of a city known for its grit and determination, these sisters know what it means to “go hard or go home”. Their resume demonstrates over a decade of penned and placed songs with the likes of celebrated industry notables including Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Teyana Taylor, Ciara, Candice Glover, Mary J Blige and many more. These placements have earned APLUS tremendous respect for their talent and skills. Needless to say, they are no strangers to the victories and trials of today’s ever growing and changing music industry.
“Tales from The Road or everything you wanted to know about tour management but were afraid to ask. Spend an hour with this Road Warrior”.
Doe Phillips has spent most of her life on the road. It began with a job at Arista Records in 1986 in New York City, where Doe coordinated promotion internationally for artists Whitney Houston & Aretha Franklin, she later became the international promotions manager for CBS London, and later moved to the role of Marketing Director for Columbia UK. After leaving SONY Doe became tour publicist for Oasis 1996. This relationship evolved over 12 years until Doe was the last Oasis tour manager. This summer she will be splitting her time between Jake Bugg and USA icon, Blondie. Though she has weaned herself off time on the road. “It’s an addiction,” she says, “being on the road. There’s nothing else in the world like the adrenalin rush you get when you put a band on stage”.
