Masterclass review by MARIE HICKS (Commercial Songwriting Student)

Marie Hicks

DIME Denver caught up with one of our newest students Marie Hicks, who is studying the Commercial Songwriting degree program.

I commute from my home in Boulder to Denver every Thursday to attend the hour long Masterclass at DIME Denver. Ever since I became a songwriter, I’ve fought the voice in my head that says “I’m not good enough, I won’t make it, I shouldn’t be here, etc.” like most artists I’ve met. Each masterclass motivates the more important voice, the one that says “music is the closest thing to me so I can’t stop, my musical expression is important enough for me, and being myself is the best thing I can do”. The most common theme I’ve noticed in the masterclasses is “be yourself”. I’ve had the very special opportunities to meet Mike Dawes, Rob Drabkin, Kevin Nixon (president of DIME), Larry Thompson, Mark Bliesener, Andy Thomas, Neyla Pekarek, Anesha and Antea Birchett, Tobias Krause, Doe Phillips, and Chris Johnson speak honestly and openly about their experiences with music in the music industry (and some even perform for us). Their stories and advice are extremely important to me because they prepare me for positions I haven’t been in and the reality of working in the music business.

I’m certain I’d be totally lost without the knowledge I have now. Every masterclass features talented, hardworking musicians or people in the music industry who make time for us to teach important lessons so we can succeed. I’ve felt their passion and wisdom intended for us to remember and apply. I always find myself relating to the masterclass guests in some way and am reminded we’re humans simply connecting over music, and I’m in music school for a reason. The vulnerability of sharing my music terrifies me, and I commute to Denver every Thursday to convince myself it’s worth facing the fear, for every masterclass guest has, and inspires me to.
